Why is my homemade cold process soap turning black on top just hours after I poured it?
I used only clove and orange essential oils, no vanilla. It’s turning speckly gray/black on the top.
How long ago did you pour it? I have a couple of ideas: when did you add the oils? If they were added at too hot a lye/oil temp, they could change color. I’ve had this happen before. I like to have my oils/lye at about 109 when I combine them. I don’t add the essential oils until thin to medium trace. Hmmm… Or, it may be a strange gel phase, also temperature related. Did you insulate? Did you use milk, sugar or honey in your formula? These can cause temperature spikes during gel which may result in strange colors.

What is meant by soap? Why it is used?
In chemistry, soap is a salt of a acid. Soapis mainly used for washing and cleaning, but soaps are also important components of lubricants. Natural handmade soaps are quite addictive after you begin to use them. They have a wonderful lather that leaves your skin so much healthier than the ‘soaps’ you buy at your grocery store.
The reason a natural soap is better for us is because it contains oil and glycerine. Those are the main ingredient that gets left out of the commercial variety. Those types of bathing bars are really detergents – not soap. Just look at the labels a little closer and you’ll see what I mean. There’s really no soap in grocery store ‘soap’.
Some of the most popular oils used in homemade soap are:
- Olive oil
- Coconut oil
- Sesame oil
- Palm oil
- Cocoa butter
There’s a long list of other specialty oils that soap makers like to use and they are usually added as an addition to the main type used. Depending on if your skin is sensitive, aging, dry or oily, there’s soap just for you and me. The variety you can find with this type of product is almost limitless. If you’re like me, you’ll enjoy buying (or making) all the ‘flavours’ and eventually will find your favourites.
Variety is the spice of handmade soaps. Essential oils are used to give them the wonderful scents that we lmeant ove so much. Just as the type of oil used is good for certain skin types, the essential oils are also helpful for any type of condition you may have. And also, they’re there for the wonderful aroma that surrounds you each time you use them.

Advantages of Natural Soap can be understood by a fact that Chemically soap is a salt. An acid and a base react with one another and neutralize into the salt (the soap). The process is called saponification, as the acid and the base react the solution is saponifying making soap.
OIL + BASE = SOAP + GLYCERIN
There are many forms of acids and bases and many different ways of making soap. So cold hot process used by the industrial manufacturers, where they extract the natural glycerin from the process and sell the natural glycerin as an expensive by-product.
