Does anyone have a recipe to make liquid castile soap. I am trying to go natural and need help thanks?
Looking for recipe with olive oil and lye…
78 oz. olive oil
6 oz. coconut oil
6 oz. palm oil
24 oz. cold water (if you want to up that, you can…soap will be softer after 24 hours. Don’t exceed 32 ounces.)
12 oz. lye crystals
Oils at 140 degrees, Lye Solution at 110 degrees.
This basic castile recipe was taken from the Soap Newbies Member Recipes page and was submitted by Nancy. The original had 140 degrees as the oil temperature and I’d probably go with 110 degrees. I upped the olive oil a bit to accommodate 12 oz. of lye and have increased the water slightly after consulting the MMS Lye Calculator page. I have to say that it is my favorite castile type recipe and the soap is nice, smooth and hard without any excess oil seepage or stickiness. It’s also easy as ingredients go (except the palm oil for some, but it doesn’t use very much). When using a stick blender, it sets up rather quickly after trace so you need to pour it at the early trace stage and not waste any time. It also heats up after pouring and will become translucent for a bit before it begins to cool back down (this is true if your mold is deeper …if you cover it right away, you will be blissfully ignorant of this fact!). One of the batches didn’t get as hot as the others and I’m thinking that the amount and type of fragrance/essential oils used contributes to the amount of heating up. Another factor may be their high oil temperature. Starting at 110 degrees may buy you more time.

Up until mid 1800′s, Many people use to make their own lye soap from simple household supplies. They used three main ingredients Lye, Lard (pig’s fat) and hard labour. Back in these times people had huge wooden bins outside their homes, they use to pour the left over ashes from their wood stoves into these bins and when the time came to make their soap they would tip water onto the ashes, it would pour through and they would siphon out the liquid, lye. Lard (fat) was obtained through an annual hog killing that took place once a year around the time of the first hard frost in autumn. The fat was then saved to make the soap. The third ingredient needed was a a pair of hands for some hard labour.
The lard and Lye were then mixed together over a fire and stirred with a long handled paddle for hours, it was then poured into a metal pan and left for anything from a week to a month. Once it hardened, it was cut and divided out for everybody to use in cleaning and laundry, people today still purchase the original lye soap.
These days the lard which was once used is substituted for different oils. Fragrances are added for scent, and sometimes natural oils such as aloe, jojoba, or coconut are added which soothe the skin. Oatmeal is great for sensitive and reddened skin and lye soap itself is good for reducing the itching caused by insect bites. The health positive benefits of natural soaps are incredible, It can reduce irritations of previous or exciting skin conditions, make you feel cleaner and you get to avoid the harsh chemicals and by-products in most commercially produced soaps.
A fantastic hobby and very cheap to start up, you will find that when you make lye soap yourself you can guarantee that a custom made soap is far better then anything brought of a store shelf.

Why not use Drano instead of lye in soap-making recipes?
The label is not clear that there are other ingredients. Anyone have any information??
How can I be an unreal soap maker? Mr Bill? My soaps are used by others, so I am assured that they are real. And I know I exist.
Now I presume you mean “soap makers who make soap using ‘real’ ( should read /really/: adverb and all that) old fashioned methods”. . I just use modern methods since I do not have a pile of wood in ash from to dribble water through. Sorry.
A lot of you don’t know what you are talking about. But no, you can’t use draino because it has other ingredients in it that you don’t need in your soap.
Real soap makers don’t buy lye, they make it out of hardwood ash.
