Homemade soap – is it really better for the environment?
Is it better than buying say a bar of organic soap?
You still have to buy ingredients for making the soap..which takes packaging..
I buy all my handmade soap from a woman who raises goats for cheese making and heats her house with wood. So all her ingredients are right from her farm stead. No waste, no packaging. She packages her soaps very simply with a piece of recycled paper with her logo on it and the paper is secured by an old hair tie she was given (kept it out of the land fill.
Commercially made soaps have a lot of ingredients in them that are not earth friendly nor are they friendly to our skin. I get the driest skin from using commercial soaps but when I use hand made goats milk soap my skin stays soft and I do not have to use hand creams. When I use commercially made soaps I have to use hand creams (coincidence that most soap companies also make hand creams?)
All that said I do have soap making friends that have gotten away from using home made ingredients and buy in all their ingredients. The soap is nice but much closer to commercial soaps and not a bit better for the environment other than they are made in small batches so the make does not have to build a factory and buy a pacakging line and a warehousing to store the soaps plus a fleet of trucks to deliver to stores nationwide.
I guess the answer really depends who made the soap and how did they make it?

To sell homemade soap, do I have to have it approved by Board of Health or anything?
I know to sell homemade food products you have to have an approved and inspected kitchen, etc. Do any of these rules apply to selling homemade soap? All ingredients will be listed on packaging. Thanks!
It depends on the country. American soap makers need very little regulation: in the UK to sell a cosmetic legally it would take a vast amount of paperwork.
Each recipe has to be registered, cost about £400, and you can only used the ingredients from the sources listed at registration. If you need to change suppliers for even one ingredient you have to re-register.You also can’t prepare it in a kitchen also used for food
This is why a lot of shops that blend their own fragrance oils sell them for labelled ‘for oil burners’, so no license required. Most small scale soap makers in the UK operate illegally, and sell small scale in local shops and markets (not that I do that….).
